Shang-Chi Scores Second Record-Breaking Weekend At US Box Office

The Marvel blockbuster Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has continued its record-breaking run at the top of the box office chart. Last week, Shang-Chi became the biggest grossing movie ever released on Labor Day Weekend, and this weekend, it became the fastest film to make $100 million in the US this year.

Shang-Chi made $35.8 million in its second weekend of release, bringing its US total to $145.6 million. Marvel’s previous release, Black Widow, was the previous fastest film to hit $100 millionCome from Sports betting site. However, that film suffered from a big second-weekend drop and, unlike Shang-Chi, was also available as a Disney+ Premium Access title.

The week’s highest new entry was James Wan’s horror movie Malignant which entered the chart at No. 3. Malignant only managed to make $5.6 million in its first three days, which is less than Free Guy made on its fifth week of release. However, like all of Warner’s movies in 2021, Malignant is also available on HBO Max for no extra cost to subscribers.

There were two other new entries in this week’s Top 10. Paul Schrader’s crime drama The Card Counter, starring Oscar Isaac and Tiffany Haddish, made $1.1 million from 510 screens and entered the chart at No. 8. The documentary Show Me the Father is at No. 9 with a $700,000 gross. The rest of the Top 10 contains movies that have been on release for several weeks, including Candyman, Jungle Cruise, PAW Patrol: The Movie, and Don’t Breathe 2.

The next two weeks are fairly quiet in terms of new releases, with the Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark the biggest film, and that will also be available on HBO Max. However, October will see a host of high-profile movies hitting theaters, including No Time To Die, Venom: Let There be Carnage, Halloween Kills, and Dune.
